The kids are down for their naps right now. Lane went fast asleep around 12:15, and Dylan read to herself until about thirty minutes ago. Now I can hear her snoring.
About an hour ago: I had been half listening to her read to herself, as I worked on an assignment. She was "reading" from memory, from last night's reading session. All of sudden she burst into tears. I knew that cry. It's the one I experience quite often as a slightly emotional mother. In the midst of reading something, I'll simply burst into a few tears, mostly from joy, but sometimes from a breeze of sadness, a shade of guilt, or burst of laughter. Tears are a funny thing, but that's another blog.
I distinctly heard her burst into tears mid-sentence, but she continued reading. She was cry-reading. So I tiptoed into her room to see what was going on. She looked up at me with a crocodile tear zigzagging down her cheek, as I asked what was wrong.
"It's saaad," she sniffled.
"What is baby, your book?"
"Yeah, it's saaad momma."
My heart pulsated with a joyful bless-her-heart, as I was on the verge of cry-smiling.
One of the books we read last night was called, "Every Dog Needs a Bone." The storyline entails a dog whose "mistress" (I wish they would call her mommy or something else) has left him at home and the dog is sad. The illustration shows the dog looking out the window and crying as his owner drives down the driveway. That is kind of sad....
BUT, the owner returns shortly and she's been to the store, and low and behold, she brought her sweet dog a big bone! So, all is well in the world.
So I sweetly remind my little animal lover that in the end he DOES get a bone, and that she should fnish the book and then get some rest.
What a kind heart. It nearly burst mine, and I had to share.

Silence Isn't Always Sweet
As much as I really enjoy my Tuesdays and Thursdays with my children, I must be honest. I also really enjoy naptime. It's wonderful. The quiet. The stillness. The silence. It's only a few hours, but it's silent sweetness....
Until you discover that the silence didn't mean they were sleeping. My 3 1/2 year old, doesn't much take a nap at home anymore. If she does, it takes forever for her to fall asleep, and then she's out all afternoon. This usually doesn't happen though. I typically let her watch a vegetale and rest and then put her in bed to lie there and...well just lie there until my 1 1/2 year old wakes up.
Every now and then, my 3 decides to be creative. Sidenote: She has genes that came from neither one of her parents. She likes pink. A LOT. She loves to have her toes and nails painted. Loves to dress up. Likes to pretend to put make up on, etc, etc.
Well, every now and then, my 3 goes into sneaky, stealth mode. I never hear a peep. Granted I should check on her sneaky little butt, but I don't. I'm enjoying my sweet silence!
A few weeks ago, I kept thinking that she had been really good about staying in her bed. Thought it was a little wierd, but shrugged it off. I go in there to find my sweet, darling, little girl in her bed with my make up bag! She had given herself a makeover. But the thing is, it was all in the right place! She had no mirror to look in. Homegirl had just sat there and compact by tube by pencil, she had done her face. Of course the mascara was streaked across her eyelid and not on the lashes. And the blush looked clownish. And she had enough lip gloss on to paint a postcard. But I was slightly impressed with her skills, and thus couldn't get irrately mad. I was...sort of proud.
Now today. I'm sitting in here at the computer, typing away on my other blog (wierdo) about Christmas, and I here my 1 crying. It had been over two hours, so I called it quits on my sweet silence, and went to get my little man. As I opened the hallway door, I jumped! There was a mound of something on the floor next to his door. As I flipped the light on, I realized it was my angelic 3. Piled up on the floor, in the fetal position.
me: What are you doing?
her: Nuffin'
me: No really. What are you doing?
her: Nuffin' momma.
me: WHY ARE YOU ON THE FLOOR? What have you done?
her: Umm.... (she begins to stand up, and the stench of nail polish slaps me in the face, before I can see her artwork) Ummmm...I..umm..I paint my toes. See? (smiling)
Homegirl did not paint her toes. She painted her feet. Hands too.
Now I'm completely nervous and literally afraid seeing the crime scene. I actually would rather not, by the looks of her. But I know I have to. There still might be wet paint.
me: Where did you do this?
her: Huh?
me: Where did you paint yourself? Where were you?
her: Uuhhh...in da bed.
me: In your bed!
I look in her room, once-over her bed. I see nothing.
me: No really. Where were you? Tell me.
her: In da bed. In your bed.
me: MY BED?????
I slowly walk into our room. I'm looking on my bed and I really don't see much. There's a few drops on two of the pillows. Some crusty dried polish on the bed from where she opened the bottle, but that's it. Nothing in the bathroom. Nothing on the carpet. Nothing hardly anywhere.
I'm in shock. Amazed. And then I'm thinking....So, do I get mad? Because, really, she did a good job. In fact, she did a great job for a 3! She just painted her entire foot, that's all.
So I turned to my 3, got in her face, and very calmly, but scarily, said, "Don't you ever, ever, do that without me. Never even get this bag out, without me. Only paint with mommy. Do you hear me?"
Yes m'am.
Left me scratching my head a bit. It was bad, but she did good. So she's getting good at being bad? Or she's just really got a knack for beauty shop stuff? Hmmm...
I suppose I'll insert breaks to ensure my silence ends sweetly next time.
I love it!

Stand Up, Stand Up & Potty Power
My little urchins are doing so much these days. First of all, each and every day we have more real conversations with Dylan. By this I mean that, not only can we understand the words that she's saying, but we're getting sentences and real answers to questions. Like, "What did you learn today?" She answers, "Tap.Tap.Tap" Excellent! This would be on Monday, when she has dance. Or, "Dylan, who do you want to come to your Birthday party?" Her reply, "Ummm....Ma-cy, No-ah...Phillip no come, Phillip no come." We're just glad to be speaking mostly English. And to finally hear the words that she's been saying, but that sounded very similar to Japanese...."I love you too" - well it's nearly heartbreaking. Speaking of heartbreaking, try bawling happy tears while Dylan sings Jesus Loves Me on the way to school!
My little man is just as chunky as ever! He's so sweet. His new word is "Uh-ohhhhh." Those five h's are there for a reason too, not just eye-appeal. It's a very exaggerated word for him. So cute! Lane has been pulling up and cruising for some time. Friday night, we were in Dallas visiting Cade and Lesli and he decided to show us he could stand up all by himself in the middle of the room. He did this twice and then saw Dylan running around and it seemed he decided that crawling was much faster, so why bother. Hasn't done much of it since then, but it's coming.
My baby girl is on her 2nd week of wearing big girl panties! In fact, we've got to get some more, but those things are expensive! Well, they aren't cheap. And I'm talking Target, not Victoria Secret. What the heck! Anyway, we're still having VERY FEW accidents, but I'm constantly washing those things. She's been doing great, until Sunday at Pump It Up. We experienced the I'm Not Gonna Stop Playing to Go thing. That was fun. Luckily I had packed extra everything.
D has a new friend. Little Macy. Macy has long hair, is a bit of a tattle-tell and is nearly a year older than Dylan. I think Macy's one of the oldest and Dylan is one of the youngest in their class, but they have become peas in a pod, or so it seems. They were inseperable at the party. I may help keep Macy on day care holidays (another post), so I'll keep you posted on that. Philip was witness to his first encounter with Female Fickleness. He used a different word though. He came up to me at the party Sunday and said, "Man, girls are ***bleeps***." I asked why and he replied, "Because Dylan and Macy just got into a fight and they were pulling each other out of that car, and now they're back to playing together again." "Oh, that's called fickle. That's only going to get worse," I explained.
Let's see...what else? Dylan is swimming by herself with a life jacket on. Lane loves the water, but isn't really into actually swimming yet.
Oh, you'll love this - on our way home from Dallas Saturday, Lane had finally given in and conked out, however Dylan was fighting it. But she was being good, until I heard her say, "Hey! Hey! Wake up! Hey, Lane! Wake up!" I wanted to stick a sock in her mouth! That little terd. She was telling Lane to wake up b/c she wanted some company. She was successful. He awoke. He smiled for a second, then proceeded to wail. Lovely.
We've got the whole fam coming in this weekend for Cade and Lesli's shower. And cousin Colton will be here as well, so lots of fun in store. More to come!!!

The Power: Daughter Over Daddy
Anyone who is a daughter, has a sister, is a daddy of a daughter, knows a daddy of a daughter, knows a daughter of a daddy - you get the picture - you know that there is a certain power; a certain connection daughters have with daddys (most of the time).
I happen to know this from experience, and I happened to know, in a foreseeing kind of way, when we found out we were going to have a little girl Pregnancy Round 1, that we would be having a daddy's girl. In fact, I had anxiety and worries that our daughter and Philip would gang up on me, and talk about bad dinners behind my back. Little did I know they wouldn't bother with secrecy, but they'd just lay it out there. I digress.
I knew she would have him wrapped around her finger, and although Philip would consistently deny it, I knew better. Dylan has experienced many things, many leniencies, many of lifes treats, due to her relationship with her father - donuts, chocolate milk (at an earlier age than I would have liked), chips for a snack almost nightly, the exhilaration of flying through the air towards Gigi's headboard from the launch pad of Gigi's bedroom door and her daddy's arms; being thrown into the air nearly hitting the ceiling or fan; sliding down the slide upside down on her back naked into the baby pool - all of these things are daddy introduced, and what a more wonderful life she will live because of him.
Dylan continues to grow into her daddy relationship daily. And Philip continues to fall head over heels each day. You can see it in the pictures of her first few weeks of life - he didn't know what had hit him, but he was helpless. Strangers can see it anywhere we go, just by seeing the way that he looks at her. So, it's no secret the relationship they have, and I know this better than anyone.
HOWEVER, there are things about Philip that don't just change. Anyone who knows Philip, knows of his stubborness, how set in his ways he is - we're talking cement, not heavy sand. He's a man's man, he has his OWN thoughts and thought processes.
But tonight, I was priviledged to see the furthest extent of Daughter over Daddy power, I've seen yet.
I wanted to go for a walk this evening, and I was going to take Lane. Dylan was watching a movie and I never dreamed she'd want to come, and Lane enjoys our walks and plus it makes him very relaxed (sleepy). So, as I put Lane in the stroller and got ready to head out the door, Dylan jumps up and says she wants to go. Embarrassingly I admit, I questioned her - Are you sure you want to go baby? Aren't you watching your movie? Sounds terrible, I know, but we didn't splurge for the two-seater stroller. Even when Megan called when I was pregnant with Lane and said there was one for sale down the street from her for $30, I turned it down, determined that Dylan would walk everywhere by the time Lane got here. What the heck was I thinking? Anyway, I'm too frugal (anal) to buy one, so we have about 3 single-seater strollers, and while I've considered bungie-cording two of them together, I haven't actually tried that, at Philip's request.
So as I'm standing in the entryway trying to decide what to do, Dylan whips her curls around and turns to her Daddy and says, "Daddy I go for walk," as she pulls on her stroller. Ohhhh dear....poor thing, I'm thinking. She really wants to go, but that's never going to happen. Bless her heart. But I decided to play along, and jokingly said, "Aahhh...Philip, she really wants to go, come on, you better come with us." I can see the look of disgust on his face.
To Philip's credit though, the man works outside each and every day, all day, and not just working, we're talking labor-intensive work. Sometimes lifting 30-40lb. block all day long. And the temperature has been in the triple digits for two weeks. Plus, he's never ever ever done any type of exercise other than playing a sport or swimming, and if you told him swimming was exercise he probably wouldn't do it.
Anway, back to Daughter Power - I'm laughing inside, because I can tell Dylan is really working him, but I know he's not going to go. But Dylan persists "Daddy, I go, I go." Oh man, she's good.
"Fine." WHAT?!?!?!?!? Yes, he said "Fine." My eyes were as big as golf balls. I wheeled around and took Lane outside as they went back in to get Dylan dressed. I'm dumbfounded, I don't know this person. It really is true. The power of daughters over daddys is truly POWERFUL. It's undeniable. It's unrelenting. I knew I had that capability at one time, but it is so different to see it in action in your daughter in this situation.
And so, my husband, walks out with a stroller (the wrong one, but he wasn't going back) and he walked with us. He walked the entire time, pushing a stroller. I couldn't help it, but I was smiling ear-to-ear the entire way. I couldn't stop. I was almost laughing out loud with joy. I never thought in a million years I would ever see this and here we were - walking the neighborhood. He's going to kill me for posting this, but I could not resist. It's too good!
More power to you baby girl! Peace and love.

Lane's One Year Old!
Written on 7/25/08 (Actually about 12:15a.m. 7/26/08)
I had the most wonderful day today. I wouldn't have guessed it would be as wonderful as it was with the kick start we had though!
I took a day of vacation today to spend some time with Lane on his birthday. I slept a little bit later than I had planned, but I was okay with that because I wasn't really on a schedule (I know!) So I was putting up some clothes in my room when I heard Lane. Typically Lane makes one of two sounds in the morning. It's either the happy, kind of talking to himself noises, or the whinny cry that says, "Okay, I'm awake and I've waited long enough, now come get me." However this morning it was a sound I've only heard a few other times and it was a desperation cry/grunt. Like he was kind of freaking out about something. But I didn't really pay it any mind and went into Dylan's room to get her so we could sing for Lane.
She was awake and happily agreed to come with Mommy to sing Lane Happy Birthday. So, camera in hand I clicked record and we enter Lane's room singing Happy Birthday.
About the time we got to the third, higher pitched verse, I was slapped in the face with an odor so foul I almost dropped the camera. I kept my cool though until we finished the song and put the camera down. I eyed Lane up and down, not wanting to get any closer, and OH MY GOSH! It was EVERYWHERE! I don't care if you've been through a similar experience, you've never seen anything like this. In fact, I almost took pictures b/c I figured no one would understand the extent of the massacre I was looking over.
Lane takes his diaper off now. If he's pooped in the morning, and I don't get him in time, it's coming off. Of course, if I had put him in pjs this wouldn't have happened. But my child is completely, and I mean completely, covered in poo. Caked around the thighs, dried to his calves, on his toe nails, in between his piggies, on his belly, arms, FACE, and his bed looked just as bad. Needless to say our day started A LITTLE differently than I had imagined, but at least we had the worst behind us. The rest of the day was so wonderful.
We met Rhonda, my aunt Kathy and her husband Joey, and my Dad (who by the way quit smoking today!!!!!!) for breakfast at The Diner, then Lane and I went to Kid's View Park. He had so much fun. He crawled and climbed and slid and swang.

He discovered pine cones. We played peek a boo. It was awesome. Sadly, I admit it's the first time I've taken Lane to do something like that just the two of us. I'm so sorry it took me a year to do it, but we will definitely be doing that more often. I'm usually so wrapped up in Dylan that Lane gets the short end of the stick and is usually stuck in the stroller. How sad! Not today though.
After that we went to Wal-Mart, grabbed a few groceries, grabbed him a present from Gigi (gotta love being able to buy their present while they're with you!), and then headed home. He was passed out before we got there and took a good nap, giving me time to clean up the yard for the party tomorrow.
After he woke, he had lunch and played in the playroom and then we went and met Dylan, Gigi, Kathy, Ti, and Lee Ann at the pool for some swim time. Then Pizza King and ice cream for his birthday dinner (healthy, I know)! It was just a wonderful day. And we practiced walking throughout the day too. He's getting so close!

Dylan had a great day as well. She swam for over 4 hours, which I wasn't too thrilled about because she's exhausted, but I know she had fun. I just wish she hadn't been in the sun that long (thanks mother!). Grandma's forget the rules.
So, now I'm about to head to bed after spending the last three hours baking and icing 24 cupcakes and a double layer round cake to look like Lane's homemade party invites.
Do people really care what I did today? This is kind of wierd. Until tomorrow?

Makeover
I decided I needed two blogs, and of course there's a third in the works. But Living through the Greens was all about me and that didn't seem right. So my personal blog is now www.thelayersofvidalia.blogspot.com and this blog will be dedicated to THE GREENS, and rightfully so.
Lane turns 1 year old tomorrow! My little big baby boy. He's changing and he needs a dose of one-of-one time with his mommy, so I'm taking the day off tomorrow to spend it with him. Dylan will be with Gigi at Farmer's Market for peas and cantelope and then who knows what.
So I will keep everyone posted on how the day goes tomorrow and how the party goes Saturday. I'll be posting pics I'm sure.
Love to all!
